Mi-Szu (13) and Guan-Ting (13) are two middle school students who attend a local cram school in pursuit of academic improvement, as they feel that their regular school lacks the necessary support. Rural students in Taiwan not only contend with the traditionally demanding long hours of study, but also face limited assistance from public schools, often constrained by insufficient funding to employ qualified teachers. However, opting for a cram school does not necessarily guarantee a solution. In addition to their already lengthy eight-hour school day, students must dedicate further time during evenings and weekends to achieve academic success.
